Community sensitization on climate change

Community sensitization on climate change

On realizing that the community is facing increasing Environmental, Economic and Health related challenges driven by rapid urbanization Kira Municipal Council with support from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral development, Ministry of water and Environment and Wakiso district production department has embarked on community sensitization on Climate Change, Urban Smart Agriculture and Clean Cooking technology for a sustainable environment. The engagement started from Kireka to Kyaliwajjala and soon heading to Bweyogerere Division and other areas within the Municipality targeting Women, Restaurant operators, farmer groups and the youths.

Martin Luther Kajjimu, the Municipal Senior Environment Officer says that Woman and Restaurant operators were purposely selected due to the fact that they are the major consumers of fuel in the Cooking process and engaging them on smart cooking technology will obviously help to reduce on cutting down of trees for charcoal and firewood.  Funded by the Government of Uganda through the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development program (GKMA-UDP), with support from the World Bank, French Government through AFD and the Japans’ Government through JICA the sensitization program is under Pillar 2 which is aiming at building Resilience and environment protection.

Climate Change, Urban Smart Agriculture and Clean Cooking are according to Kajjimu critical for building resilient, sustainable and health urban settlement. “Many parts of Kira were forests but cut down for structural development yet in sustainable development structural development can move together with the environment and food security for the wellbeing of our people.” He said, adding on that the supporting entities supported the municipality with facilitators who are handling different field of their expertise.

“If those in cooking embrace use of gas and electricity in cooking and then the farmers also focusing on planting crops and trees that are adoptive to the community environment much will be achieved in food security, health and environment and in terms of money the very participant in the cycle will be having costs reduced and incomes increasing” said Kajjimu.

Kira Municipality with an area of 98.83 km2 is the second largest urban is having a total household of 396,189, with a growth rate of 6.68%. With such growth rate and density if necessary environmental measures are not effected, adhered to and embraced by the community members the Municipality will be in a dangerous environmental situation.
