Elevation of Kirinnya Health Center II to III is yielding fruits: facility construction in final stages

Following yielding reasonable results in the efforts to improve the education sector the Municipal leadership together with their counterparts at the Division levels are now focusing their concentration on health for the public wellbeing. In that focus therefore, Kirinnya Health Centre which was of recently elevated from Health Centre II to III has started registering visible features of a real facility at that level following the construction of a three storied structure to accommodate the facility.

A three storied building structure already roofed is now on final retouches and has been constructed with the funding the Government of with support from the World Bank under the Uganda Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfers (UGIFT) program, a World Bank initiative aiming at improving service delivery in Uganda.

At the level of Health Centre II a facility is expected to work on 5000 patients annually according to the Ministry of Health Standards but for Kirinnya at that level has been handling more than that majority being birth and antenatal cases and it’s expected that by completion things will be far better given the extended space and capacity.

Acceding to the National Housing and Population Survey 2024 by UBOS Kirinnya as a parish is having a total population of 73,454 people.

According to Dr. Sammuel Mukasa, the Principal Municipal Medical Officer the Municipality has so far recruited some Health Workers for instance in last financial year 2024/25 25 staff were recruited, One staff promoted from Clinical Officer to Senior Clinical Officer, an Epidemiologist, a Laboratory Technologist, and a Pharmacist. Mukasa says that funds for recruitment of more staff are available in the budget and all the line ministries such as Ministry of Health and Ministry of Public service have already authorized the recruitment. “In this year’s budget alone we have 360 million shillings meant for staff recruitment and we have been cleared to do so and having got working space especially in the three facilities built (Kirinnya Health Center III, Namugongo Nsawo Health Center III and Kira Health Center IV) we are hopeful that the situation will not remain the same.

Accommodation for Health workers

Hon. Rose Nakafeero Ssuka, the Municipal Executive Secretary for Health and Education says that even a journey of a thousand miles starts with one step. “A person who doesn’t know our background is the only one who cannot see and value the steps we have so far moved but knowing who we are, where we have come from and where we desire to reach we are seeing progressive work and having so far addresses the issues of working space, equipments soon we are embarking on staff accommodation else it will be meaningless to have good structures well equipped but without fully available staff to provide the service.” She said adding that the current Kira Health Center III structure was meant to be staff quarter but due to the need it had to change the purpose to meet the community demand.

“We cannot accommodate all staff but we plan to at least provide a space where a staff on duty can rest from than sleeping in the same ward with the patients” she said.#
